Title: Market Development and Upgrade within Indices
Kuwait, May 1, 2019. CMA was hosted by College of Business Administration at Kuwait University to present anpresent an awareness lecture concerning Market Development and Upgrade within Indices. The lecture was organized by Finance and Financial Institutions Department and the Finance Club.
The importance of this lecture was to achieve a main CMA goal accordinggoal according to the law of its establishment No. 7 of 2010 and the provisions of the clause 7 of Article 3 that stated: “Enhance public awareness of Securities activities and of the benefits, risks and obligations arising from investments in Securities and encourage their development.”. It also sought to work in line with the strategic projects of CMA, especially upgrading the market and promoting the financial literacy that qualifies the local posterity in order to meet the needs of the labor market in a way that concurs with the future governmental development orientations to reach the required social and educational outputs that works in line with the latest applicable international standards.
Mr. Abdulrahman Yousef Al-Failakawi, Head of Markets Regulation Department, represented CMA in this lecture. He started the lecture with introducing the CMA and its goals, and theand the relevant parties in the capital markets industry. Then he explained how the capital markets have developed in Kuwait since the establishment of CMA, moving on to the project of Market Development (MD) and its achievements in the first and second phasessecond phases, and the launch of the third phase of the project and its goals, and the implementation of its first batch was announced early this week. He ended the lecture with the matter of Kuwait’s market upgrade to an Emerging Market by S&P Dow Jones, FTSE Russell, and MSCI indices.

The Capital Markets Authority was established pursuant to Law No. 7/2010, approved by the Kuwaiti Parliament in February 2010. Pursuant to the Law, the CMA shall regulate and supervise the securities activities, achieve transparency and fairness, observe listed companies’ execution of Corporate Governance regulations, and protect investors from unfair practices which violate the CMA's Law.
Furthermore, the Law's provisions stipulate the supervision of mergers, acquisitions, and disclosure operations. The CMA also aims to provide awareness programs related to securities activities.
